Trongsa-DzongTrongsa – The Beautiful Town Displaying Its Rich History

A small yet pleasing town studded with several whitewashed shops embellished with pot plants, Trongsa defines the history of Bhutan. Environed by deep valleys, Trongsa boasts a prominent museum, which was made out of Trongsa’s watchtower.

Known to be the symbol of Trongsa’s history, the museum is dedicated to the Wangchuck dynasty. The hotel and restaurant balconies offer a spectacular view of deep valleys, Trongsa Dzong, and emerald mountains. Trongsa boasts a number of landmarks and historical monuments.

Trongsa Attractions and Excursions

  • Ta Dzong – Built in 1652, Ta Dzong was once a beautiful five storey stone structure carved in cylindrical shape. The structure is now transformed into a brand new museum that demonstrates a fantastic mix of tradition and modernity. The museum houses more than 224 items from history, which includes a bronze statue of Pema Lingpa, hallowed image of Sung Joenma Dorji Chang and more than a hundred year old prayer books, paintings and dance costumes. A visit to the museum is a real treat for history lovers.
  • Chendbji Chorten – Built in the 18thcentury by Lama Shida, Chendbji Chorten is modelled on Swayambhunath Temple. It was built with an intention to wrap the remains of an evil spirit that was crushed at this place.
  • Trongsa Dzong – Overshadowing the surrounding structures, Trongsa Dzong was the seat of power over central and eastern Bhutan. The impressive architecture of Dzong dominates the other attractions of Trongsa. Dotting the hill, this multiple storey Dzong is a secure fortress that is visible from every corner and angle of the town. It is one of the finest illustrations of Bhutanese architecture.
  • Thruepang Palace – The two storied palace is the birthplace of Late King Jigme Dorji Wangchuck. It is spot of historical importance, and currently used by the dominating monarch. The entry is strictly prohibited to the public.
  • Kuenga Rabten Palace  – A visit to this palace introduces tourists to the beautiful mountains and fields. It was the winter palace of the second king of the country. This wonderful expedition from Trongsa provides tourists an opportunity to know more about the history of Bhutan’s monarch.

Interesting Activities to Do at Trongsa

Trongsa offers limited yet exciting activities for tourists. Shopping and trekking are the two most important activities tourists can enjoy in the region.

  • Shopping – Trongsa is famous for handicraft items. The Phunsto Wangmo store on the main street offers a wonderful selection of handmade items like wooden bowls and woven cloth.
  • Trekking – It is one of the popular tourism activities of Trongsa. The Nabji Trek and Royal Heritage Trek are the two places to enjoy this activity.

Culture and Festival of Trongsa

Trongsa Tsechu is the biggest cultural festival of Trongsa that is generally held in the month of December. The mask dance is the attraction of the event.
