If you want to visit Bhutan then definitely come once on the occasion of Thangbi Mani Festival. It is a vibrant festival held at Chhokhor Gewog in Bumthang, Bhutan. This annual event is famous for its rich cultural heritage and unique rituals dating back centuries. The highlight of the festival is the enchanting fire blessing ceremony, known as Mewang, which is held in the open fields. During this ceremony, lay monks perform purification rituals while participants jump over flames, symbolizing the purification of sins and misfortunes.
One of the distinctive features of the Thangbi Mani Festival is the performance of traditional mask dances, which adds to the festive atmosphere and showcases Bhutan’s artistic heritage. This festival is deeply rooted in the belief that it brings peace, prosperity and ensures a bountiful harvest for the entire community.
The festival takes place in the vicinity of Thangbi Lhakang, a sacred monastery founded by Shamar Rinpoche, Chokyi Drakpa in 1470. This ancient monastery holds great importance in Bhutanese Buddhism, and the iron curtain at its entrance, said to have been put up by the saint himself, adds to its mystical charm.
