The Trans Bhutan Trail, once a vital link connecting villages, monasteries, and trade routes, was recently revived by the Tourism Council of Bhutan and Canada Foundation. Spanning 403 km, it offers a mix of easy, moderate, and challenging routes. This curated itinerary focuses on manageable sections of the trail, ensuring an enriching experience for anyone with average physical endurance. Highlights include cultural interactions, homestays, and the tranquility of forest bathing.

Day 1: Arrival in Paro – Transfer to Thimphu (54 km / 1.5 hrs)

Welcome to Bhutan! Upon arrival, your Oyepedia Travel LLP guide will greet you and accompany you to Thimphu, Bhutan’s capital. Begin your journey with a visit to Buddha Point, where a colossal Buddha statue gazes over the valley. From here, descend via the Trans Bhutan Trail through the serene areas of Tshelumaphey and Debsi, offering views of Babesa and southern Thimphu. Conclude your day at a comfortable hotel in Thimphu.

Day 2: Exploring Thimphu

Start your day with a hike from BBS Tower to Wangditse Lhakhang. Meandering through forests of pine and birch, this trail offers panoramic views of Thimphu Valley. After lighting a butter lamp at the temple, return along the same path.

Next, visit the Takin Preserve to see Bhutan’s unique national animal before exploring the ancient Takin Trail beside a gentle stream. Enjoy lunch at Simply Bhutan, a living museum showcasing Bhutanese traditions. In the afternoon, witness traditional paper-making at the Jungshi Paper Factory and marvel at exquisite thangka paintings. End the day at Changlimithang Stadium to enjoy Bhutan’s national sport, archery.

Day 3: Thimphu – Dochula Pass – Punakha

Drive to Dochula Pass, known for its 108 Druk Wangyel Stupas and sweeping views of the Eastern Himalayas. Embark on a short descent along the Trans Bhutan Trail to Lamperi, where you’ll visit the lush Lamperi Botanical Park. After lunch at Menchuna Restaurant, continue to Chandana and learn about the fascinating legend of the Divine Madman.

Resume the trail with a hike to Sew Drangsa, where monastic bodies once dined. From here, your driver will transfer you to Punakha for a restful evening.

Day 4: Discovering Punakha

Explore Punakha, the ancient winter capital of Bhutan, beginning with a visit to its majestic 17th-century fortress. Cross the traditional cantilever bridge over the Mo Chu River and hike to the Pho Chu Suspension Bridge.

You have two options:  

  1. Visit Khamsum Yulley Lhakhang and enjoy a picnic along the Mochu River at Zomlithang.
  2. Hike further along the Trans Bhutan Trail to Limbukha Village for a picturesque trek and an optional campsite experience.

Day 5: Punakha to Phobjikha Valley

Travel to the stunning Phobjikha Valley, stopping for lunch at Nobgang Village. Resume your adventure with a hike on the Phobjikha Rhododendron Trail. This 3-hour trail offers breathtaking views of the valley, culminating in Khumbu Valley near Gangtey Goenpa. Afterward, your driver will take you to your hotel in Gangtey.

Day 6: Gangtey to Paro

Embark on the Gangtey Eco-Trail for a serene hike through the Phobjikha Valley, ending at Khewa Lhakhang. Visit the Crane Information Center before driving to Paro. Enjoy lunch at Nobgang Village along the way and check into your hotel upon arrival.
